Nazım Ünal Yılmaz’s second solo exhibition at Galerist, “Atsız Süvari,” opens to the public on January 16. The artist creates a visual narrative that questions power dynamics through works that explore subject-object and human-animal relationships.

The figures in the “Atsız Süvari” exhibition appear as objectified bodies: groups that seem active but remain passive, competitors, and fighters… Additionally, horses are depicted as Kafkaesque subjects, transcending their traditional associations with freedom, independence, and power. They are brought to court, carried on stretchers.

With a focus on rhythm and color, the works initially seem to align with the intuitive German painting tradition. However, upon closer inspection, the compositions resemble a collage, inviting viewers to recognize symbolic and conceptual connections between images and canvases in order to derive meaning. The exhibition’s layout within the gallery space allows for both individual and collective readings of the monolithic canvases.

The exhibition catalogue text is written by Alexander Koch. “Atsız Süvari” will be on view until February 22, 2025, and can be visited Tuesday to Saturday, from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
